Pierre-Régis Martin, MD
Pierre-Régis has worked in Cambodia since 1995. Originally, he worked as a Medical Coordinator at the French International NGO Médecins du Monde (Doctors of the World) where he was responsible for the implementation of a general medicine ward consisting of 55 beds. This ward was dedicated to the poor — primarily refugees, prisoners and minorities. Shortly after, he went on to set up a comprehensive program for poor and at risk populations that focused on HIV prevention and testing, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) treatment as well as medical care for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA). For this work, Pierre-Régis has received several awards from the Prime Minister and the Minister of Health.
In conjunction with the Pasteur Institute, Pierre-Régis opened the first Outpatient Department for PLHA in Cambodia. In addition, he was in charge of the Intensive Care Unit department of Calmette hospital, located in Phnom Penh. Building upon his activities around HIV, Pierre-Régis secured funding to build and operate a 70 person staff 2000m² health center that focuses on providing care and support to over 3000 HIV/AIDS patients (OPD/IPD).
By working with Sharing Experience for Adapted Development (SEAD), a local NGO in Cambodia, Pierre-Régis helped create of the first magazine dedicated to PLHA and the first national directory of services for vulnerable people.
Along with his direct work with HIV/AIDS patients, Pierre-Régis worked to develop software with a private company to optimize patients’ follow ups.
Pierre-Régis has a large cross-disciplinary network in Cambodia and even wrote a reference book about Khmer language.
